What does the name mean: The Latin name Procoptodon comes from the Greek words pro- (“forward”) and kopto (“to cut”) and is usually interpreted as “projecting incisor” or “cutting front tooth”.
Procoptodon — the giant short-faced kangaroo — was an extinct genus of marsupials that lived in Australia during the Pleistocene. Members of this genus were much larger than modern kangaroos. The largest species, Procoptodon goliah (also often written as Procoptodon goliath), reached a height of about 3 m and a mass of approximately 240 kg.
In overall appearance, Procoptodon differed noticeably from modern kangaroos. One of its most distinctive features was its short face with large forward-facing eyes that provided a broad field of view. This skull structure was associated with the development of powerful chewing muscles needed for processing tough plant food. The dentition was highly specialized: the molars had high crowns and ridged grinding surfaces effective for shredding vegetation. Large incisors were used to clip leaves and branches.
The limbs of Procoptodon were also unusual. The hind legs were long and powerful; unlike modern kangaroos, the foot retained a single large weight-bearing toe functionally resembling a hoof. This structure provided stable bipedal locomotion. The forelimbs were short and ended in two elongated fingers with large claws that were probably used for pulling branches closer and grasping vegetation.
The skeleton of Procoptodon was massive and robust, allowing it to support considerable body weight. Its digestive system was adapted for processing large amounts of coarse plant material, including leaves and stems.
Giant short-faced kangaroos inhabited semi-arid regions of Australia and fed on leaves from trees and shrubs. Their extinction was part of the broader disappearance of the Australian megafauna at the end of the Pleistocene. The causes of this extinction remain debated; the main hypotheses involve climate change, human impact, or a combination of both factors.
