What does the name mean: “sharp hyena” (from the Greek ὀξύς — “sharp” and hyaena — “hyena”).
Oxyaena was a carnivorous mammal of the early Eocene that lived about 56–40 million years ago. It inhabited forest ecosystems of North America, Europe, and Asia during a period of rapid mammalian diversification after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Oxyaena had a flexible, muscular body about 1 meter long (excluding the tail), with short, powerful limbs bearing five toes and small claws. The skull was broad and relatively low, measuring around 20 cm in length. Its elongated snout and strong jaws with sharp teeth indicate a carnivorous diet.
Despite its superficial resemblance to some modern predators, Oxyaena was not a specialized fast-running pursuit hunter. The structure of its limbs indicates a plantigrade gait similar to that of bears and raccoons. This limited its maximum speed but provided stability and maneuverability in dense vegetation.
Oxyaena was a carnivorous animal. Its diet included small vertebrates, birds, reptiles, insects, and probably carrion. Its powerful jaws allowed it to process relatively tough food. The study of Oxyaena is important for understanding the early evolution of mammalian predators and the structure of Eocene ecosystems.
