Saltasaurus is a representative of herbivorous dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period from the family Saltasauridae. It lived in what is now South America approximately 72–68 million years ago, when the continents were already beginning to assume familiar outlines. This dinosaur received its name from the locality where it was discovered — in 1975, its fossils were found in northwestern Argentina, in Salta Province.
Saltasaurus reached 10–12 meters in length — a comparatively modest size by the standards of the gigantic titanosaurs, among which true giants occurred. However, this «small» sauropod became a scientific sensation. For a long time, scientists believed that bony armor was not characteristic of sauropods. Saltasaurus became the first confirmed sauropod whose body was covered with small bony plates — osteoderms. These rounded, mosaic-like scutes provided additional protection against predators, transforming a soft-skinned herbivore into a living armored animal.
Saltasaurus belongs to the titanosaurs — one of the last and most successful lineages of Late Cretaceous sauropods. Their genus may be considered evolutionary «survivors»: while duck-billed hadrosaurs and horned ceratopsians dominated other continents, in isolated South America sauropods continued to prevail. Only occasionally did some representatives of this group reach North America — as if the final envoys of a fading era of giants.
Thus, Saltasaurus became not merely one of the last titanosaurs, but also a symbol of resilience — living evidence that even in a world filled with predators and change, survival was possible when natural selection endowed a lineage with both strength and armor.
