What does the name mean: The name Deinogalerix (from the Greek deinos — “terrible” and galerix — “hedgehog”) refers to an extinct genus of insectivorous mammals that inhabited what is now Southern Europe during the Late Miocene, approximately 11–7 million years ago.

Despite its name, Deinogalerix was not a true hedgehog. It belonged to the gymnures — a group of insectivores whose closest modern representatives inhabit Southeast Asia. Externally, gymnures resemble large rats or opossums: they lack spiny coverings and possess dense fur, an elongated snout with developed vibrissae, small eyes, and pointed ears.

Deinogalerix evolved under conditions of island isolation. During the Late Miocene, the Apennine region formed an archipelago lacking large predators. This created conditions for island gigantism: the body length of Deinogalerix reached approximately 60 cm, and its mass up to 9 kg, significantly exceeding the size of modern representatives of the group.

The dental system of Deinogalerix indicates a broad diet. It probably fed on insects, mollusks, small vertebrates, eggs, and carrion. Thus, it occupied the niche of a terrestrial opportunistic predator within island ecosystems.

The study of Deinogalerix is important for understanding the evolution of insectivores and the mechanisms of island gigantism.
