What does the name mean: The genus name Chalicotherium is derived from the Greek words chalix — “pebble” and therion — “beast,” and refers to the shape of its molars, which resemble small pebbles.
Chalicotherium is a genus of extinct perissodactyl mammals that existed during the Miocene, approximately 15.9–5.3 million years ago. Their remains are known from Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, indicating the wide distribution of the genus. Several species are currently recognized, including Chalicotherium goldfussi, Chalicotherium brevirostris, and Chalicotherium salinum.
Chalicotherium species were large herbivorous animals whose size ranged from that of a sheep to a large horse. Shoulder height could reach approximately 2 m, and when standing on the hind limbs they may have reached up to 3 m in height; body mass has been estimated at up to approximately 1 t. They were distinguished by a limb structure unusual for perissodactyls: the forelimbs were elongated, whereas the hind limbs were shorter and more massive. The digits ended not in hooves but in large claws. The claws are thought to have been used for feeding — with them the animals could pull down tree branches and strip leaves, as well as loosen soil while searching for underground plant parts.
The head of Chalicotherium resembled that of a horse, but with a shorter snout. Adult individuals lacked incisors and canines, a feature associated with feeding on soft vegetation. These teeth are believed to have been reduced during maturation, while their function was partially compensated by well-developed lips used for grasping vegetation. Food processing was carried out mainly by the molars. The tail was short. Behavioral reconstructions suggest that chalicotheres may have adopted a semi-seated posture during feeding, using the forelimbs to pull branches closer.
Chalicotherium inhabited diverse ecosystems, including forests and open landscapes. They disappeared at the beginning of the Pleistocene. Among the possible causes of extinction are climatic changes and competition with other large herbivores such as proboscideans and rhinoceroses.
