What does the name mean: “lizard with small shields”.
Scutellosaurus was a remarkable representative of ancient fauna that lived on our planet during the Early Jurassic period, about 196 million years ago. This dinosaur inhabited the territory of present-day Arizona, USA. It belonged to the suborder Thyreophora, known for their armored bodies. Scutellosaurus, however, differed from its later and much larger relatives by its more primitive anatomy. Its size was relatively small — only about 1.2 meters in length, with a skull measuring merely 9 centimeters.
Imagine a medium-sized lizard covered with numerous small shields, rapidly running across the dry plains of the Jurassic period. This is what one of the earliest armored dinosaurs looked like. Unlike modern lizards, which press close to the ground while running, Scutellosaurus moved just as swiftly on two legs, much like small mammals, skillfully maintaining balance with the help of its long tail. If threatened, this agile dinosaur may have crouched close to the ground, exposing only its shield-covered back, somewhat resembling a hedgehog.
Scutellosaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur. Its jaws were equipped with simple leaf-shaped teeth similar to those of a modern iguana, which it used to crop leaves and plant shoots. The shields covering its body served as reliable protection against predators. Thus, Scutellosaurus was an extraordinary creature combining traits of both lizards and dinosaurs. Its unique appearance and behavioral adaptations make it one of the most striking representatives of Early Jurassic fauna.
