«lizard from Karamay». The latter is not an entirely accurate translation of the name of the city of Karamay, located in western China, where this theropod was discovered and described in 1973.
Kelmayisaurus was a large predatory dinosaur that lived more than 100 million years ago, in the Early Cretaceous. Its remains were found in the Lianmugin Formation of China, which is known for its rich fauna of ancient reptiles. Although the discovered bones are extremely fragmentary, scientists have been able to draw several interesting conclusions about the appearance of this enigmatic theropod.
According to approximate estimates, Kelmayisaurus may have reached 10–12 meters in length — roughly comparable to a modern school bus. It moved on two powerful hind legs, while the forelimbs, as in many of its relatives, were relatively short. The dinosaur maintained balance during locomotion with the help of a long and muscular tail.
Judging by the anatomy of related taxa, the head of Kelmayisaurus was elongated, and its jaws were armed with sharp, slightly curved teeth of medium length — suitable for gripping and tearing prey. A distinctive feature by which it was identified is a deep groove in the anterior part of the dentary — a unique trait that distinguishes this species from other theropods.
Kelmayisaurus probably hunted herbivorous dinosaurs of various sizes, using its agility and strength. Its powerful legs allowed it to make rapid lunges, while its teeth and jaws were effective for holding and dismembering prey. Although little is known about this animal, even these fragmentary data portray a formidable and agile predator that occupied the top of the food chain in the ancient landscapes of the Early Cretaceous.
