«Beelzebub’s toad». Beelzebub is a leader of demons mentioned in the New Testament. On the one hand, the name reflects the «infernal» appearance of this frog, which likely bore horn-like projections. On the other hand, the demon’s name itself translates as «Lord of the Flies», a designation that is also highly appropriate for the largest frog in history.
The devil frog is one of the most remarkable creatures of the Mesozoic era. This prehistoric amphibian, also known by its scientific name Beelzebufo, lived on what is now Madagascar about 70 million years ago. The island’s isolation allowed this species to evolve under unique conditions, where it became one of the largest and most dangerous amphibian predators.
Its ominous nickname was well deserved. On its massive head were two bony projections resembling horns. Similar structures occur in some modern horned frogs, but in Beelzebufo they were far more pronounced. Moreover, the animal’s head was covered by a bony armor, an extremely rare feature among amphibians. After the Triassic period, most frogs lost such protection, but in the devil frog both the skull and the vertebral column were reinforced with bone.
These traits gave the animal a truly intimidating appearance. Beelzebufo was the largest frog ever to have existed, and it likely led an active predatory lifestyle. Its powerful jaws, armed with sharp teeth, allowed it to subdue a wide range of prey—from insects to small vertebrates, possibly including juvenile dinosaurs.
