What does the name mean: The name Homotherium comes from the Ancient Greek words homos (“same” or “similar”) and therion (“beast” or “wild animal”). The exact reason for this name is uncertain, but when the genus was first described it was probably considered closely related to the already known saber-toothed cats of the genus Machairodus. The author of the name did not leave a precise explanation.

Homotherium was an extinct genus of saber-toothed cats that inhabited North and South America, Eurasia, and Africa during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Members of the genus appeared about 4 million years ago and became extinct approximately 12,000 years ago.

Homotherium differed noticeably from other saber-toothed cats such as Smilodon. Its upper canine teeth were relatively shorter and less massive. At the same time, the body was more slender, with elongated limbs and a sloping back profile. These features resemble those of fast-running predators adapted to open environments.

Despite having smaller canines, Homotherium remained an effective predator. The structure of its jaws allowed it to deliver powerful bites and hold struggling prey. Its upper canines were probably partly covered by soft tissues, unlike the more exposed saber teeth of Smilodon.

Homotherium inhabited a variety of environments, from cold steppes to open plains. Paleontological evidence suggests that it may have been an active diurnal predator relying heavily on vision to detect prey. The study of its fossils is important for reconstructing Pleistocene ecosystems, including food-web structure and the causes behind the extinction of large predators.
