Suminia getmanovi was a small animal that lived in what is now Russia during the Late Permian, around 268–252 million years ago. This synapsid belonged to the anomodonts — relatives of mammals. Its body length did not exceed 0.5 m. Suminia is considered one of the earliest vertebrates to adopt an arboreal lifestyle long before the appearance of dinosaurs.
Suminia getmanovi possessed anatomical adaptations associated with life in trees. Its spine was highly flexible, while the elongated neck provided a wide range of head movement. The limbs were long and slender, and the hands and feet were broad, with elongated grasping fingers. A partially opposable thumb has been noted, which would have improved branch grasping ability. The long tail probably served as a balancing organ.
