What does the name mean: The genus name Proconsul means “before Consul” or “preceding Consul” and is associated with Consul, a circus chimpanzee that performed in London in the early twentieth century.

Proconsul is a genus of extinct primates that lived during the Miocene, approximately 21–16 million years ago, in what is now East Africa. Its fossil remains have been discovered in Kenya and Uganda. Several species are currently recognized, differing in size: Proconsul africanus, Proconsul gitongai, Proconsul major, and Proconsul meswae.

Proconsul was a relatively large primate: its body mass ranged from approximately 9 to 75 kg depending on the species. Its anatomy combined features characteristic of both Old World monkeys and apes.

The forelimbs and hind limbs were approximately equal in length, indicating a predominantly quadrupedal mode of locomotion. At the same time, the absence of a tail links Proconsul with apes and humans. Features of the skull and teeth also display traits characteristic of hominoids — the group that includes apes and humans.

Proconsul inhabited seasonal tropical forests with dense vegetation. It maintained a predominantly arboreal Lifestyle and spent most of its time in tree canopies, although it could descend to the ground. The diet was based mainly on fruits, supplemented by leaves and seeds.

In the ecosystems of Miocene Africa, Proconsul coexisted with large predators. Potential threats included hyaenodonts, early representatives of the order Carnivora, and large snakes.

Proconsul is important for the study of primate evolution. It is regarded not as a direct ancestor of humans, but as one of the early hominoid forms that helps trace the origin of traits characteristic of apes.
