What does the name mean: The name Toxodon is derived from Ancient Greek words meaning “bow tooth” or “curved tooth.”
Toxodon was an extinct herbivorous mammal that inhabited South America from the Late Miocene to the beginning of the Holocene, approximately from 5 million to 11,000 years ago.
Toxodon reached the size of a modern rhinoceros: up to 2.7 m in length and about 1415 kg in mass. Its body was massive and barrel-shaped, supported by short but powerful limbs with three broad toes. The hind limbs were longer than the forelimbs, giving the body a characteristic sloping profile. Such limb structure partly resembles that of modern ungulates and may have contributed to body stability during rest.
One of the most characteristic features of Toxodon was its skull: broad, with powerful jaws and rows of curved teeth, reflected in the animal’s name — “curved tooth.” The teeth lacked roots and continued growing throughout life, resembling the teeth of rodents. This feature (euhypsodonty) allowed efficient processing of tough vegetation.
Massive cervical vertebrae indicate well-developed musculature necessary for supporting the heavy head. The high position of the nasal openings suggests the presence of a mobile upper lip, possibly resembling a short trunk.
During this period, South America represented a diverse complex of landscapes — from open steppes to humid tropical forests. Toxodon probably preferred open environments, where it fed on grasses and leaves. Its massive build allowed movement through dense vegetation and provided a certain degree of protection against predators.
During the Pleistocene, South America, which had long remained isolated, possessed a unique fauna. Alongside Toxodon lived giant ground sloths such as Megatherium, which reached the size of an elephant; armored glyptodonts (Glyptodon); as well as predatory flightless birds of the group Phorusrhacidae. Large birds such as Argentavis, with a wingspan of up to 8 m, occupied the skies.
Toxodon played an important role in the ecosystems of South America. The study of its fossil remains makes it possible to reconstruct ancient natural communities and trace evolutionary processes across millions of years. It is one of the most striking representatives of the diverse fauna of extinct mammals.
