What does the name mean: Squalodon means “shark tooth”. The name is derived from the Latin word squalus (“shark,” especially dogfish sharks) and the Greek odon (“tooth”). The name refers to one of the defining features of this extinct whale — its triangular, serrated cheek teeth, which resemble shark teeth.
Squalodon was an extinct genus of predatory cetaceans that inhabited the seas of the Oligocene and Miocene, approximately 28–15 million years ago. This period was marked by major changes in marine ecosystems, within which squalodonts occupied an important role as active marine predators.
Squalodonts were medium-sized whales: the largest species, including Squalodon whitmorei, reached about 5.5 m in length. Their bodies were streamlined and adapted for active swimming, while the powerful tail provided efficient propulsion through the water.
One of the most distinctive features of Squalodon was its dentition. Unlike modern toothed whales, which possess relatively uniform conical teeth, squalodonts retained heterodonty — the presence of different tooth types. This indicates a more complex method of prey processing and reflects their relationship to more primitive cetacean forms.
The skull of Squalodon was asymmetrical and possessed an elongated rostrum — a feature characteristic of cetaceans with a developed acoustic system. Although soft tissues are not preserved, cranial anatomy suggests the presence of early forms of echolocation. This ability may have been used for navigation and prey detection.
Fossil remains of squalodonts have been discovered in Europe, North America, South America (including Chile), and possibly New Zealand. Such a distribution indicates the broad geographic range and ecological success of this group.
The study of Squalodon is important for understanding the evolution of toothed whales and the development of modern marine ecosystems.
