What the name means: Hidden clavicle
Cryptoclidus was a plesiosaur that lived in the seas around 160 million years ago. Fossilized skeletons of Cryptoclidus have been found at various times in England, France, Russia, and Cuba. This plesiosaur led an aquatic lifestyle and grew up to 4 meters long. The animal had long, thin, outward-pointing teeth, a broad skull, and long, slightly curved flippers. Its delicate jaws and teeth could not handle large prey. Cryptoclidus presumably hunted small, soft-bodied animals such as squid and small fish, or filtered sediment on the seafloor in search of tiny creatures. Cryptoclidus fossils are particularly widespread, making this plesiosaur one of the most studied and well-known.
