What does the name mean: from the Greek words lagṓs (“hare”) and herpetón (“reptile”).
Lagerpeton chanarensis was a small animal that lived during the Late Triassic period, about 236–234 million years ago. Its remains were discovered in what is now Argentina, within the famous Chañares Formation. The name comes from the Greek words for “hare” and “reptile,” reflecting the animal’s small size and its relationship to early archosauromorphs — the group that eventually gave rise to dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Despite this, Lagerpeton is not a “reptile” in the narrow modern sense of the term.
In appearance, Lagerpeton chanarensis probably resembled a small lizard-like animal about 70 cm long and weighing up to 4 kg. It possessed long hind limbs and shorter forelimbs, which may indicate the ability to move both quadrupedally and bipedally. The skeleton of Lagerpeton is known only from fragmentary remains: most discoveries consist of hind limb bones, pelvic elements, and vertebrae. Nevertheless, even these remains have allowed scientists to draw important conclusions about its anatomy and lifestyle.
One of the most remarkable features of Lagerpeton chanarensis is the structure of the hind limbs. They were long and slender, with well-developed musculature, indicating high mobility and the ability to run quickly. In addition, the structure of the foot suggests that the animal may have been capable of jumping.
The vertebral column of Lagerpeton chanarensis is also important for research. The neural spines of the posterior dorsal vertebrae are inclined forward — an unusual feature for most archosauromorphs, though one found in some other animal groups. This adaptation probably provided greater flexibility to the spine, which may have been advantageous during rapid movement and jumping.
The diet of Lagerpeton chanarensis remains debated. It was probably insectivorous, feeding on various arthropods. It is also possible that its diet included small vertebrate prey.
Lagerpeton chanarensis is regarded as an important link in archosauromorph evolution. Its study helps scientists better understand the early stages in the development of the lineage that eventually produced dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and crocodilians. These data significantly expand knowledge about the origin and diversity of early representatives of this vertebrate lineage.
