What does the name mean: Arsinoitherium means “Arsinoe’s beast”, named in honor of the Egyptian queen Arsinoe II Philadelphus. The first fossils were discovered in the region of the Fayum Oasis, which was named after her.
Arsinoitherium giganteum was a large mammal that lived during the late Eocene and early Oligocene, approximately 36–27 million years ago. Its remains have been discovered in North Africa, including Egypt, Libya, Angola, and Ethiopia.
In overall appearance, Arsinoitherium resembled a massive rhinoceros. It possessed a heavy body, column-like limbs, and two enormous horn-like projections on the nasal bones that pointed upward. An additional smaller pair of projections was located above the eye sockets. Body length reached about 3 m, shoulder height up to 1.75 m, and body mass may have approached 2.5 t.
The horn-like structures of Arsinoitherium differed from the horns of modern rhinoceroses. They were bony projections, probably covered with skin, somewhat similar to the ossicones of giraffes. Their length could reach approximately 60 cm. These structures were likely used for visual display within the species and possibly for defense.
The limbs of Arsinoitherium were massive and adapted for movement across soft substrates, including swampy ground. It inhabited tropical forests and coastal wetlands, where it fed on leaves, shoots, and fruits.
The structure of the jaws and teeth indicates a herbivorous diet with efficient processing of plant material. The jaws were capable not only of vertical movement but also forward-and-backward motion, increasing the efficiency of chewing tough vegetation. Fossil remains of Arsinoitherium are important for understanding mammalian evolution and reconstructing ancient ecosystems.
