Psammolepis in 3D Dinopedia: the armored fish | 3D Dinopedia
Psammolepis, meaning “sand scale,” thrived in Devonian seas around 393–378 Mya. This jawless fish, up to 90 cm long, had a flattened, pancake-like body encased in heavy armor coated with enamel-like tissue. The armor slowed it down but made it nearly invulnerable.

With its upward-facing mouth and bony plates instead of teeth, Psammolepis sucked in small invertebrates drifting above while living as a bottom-dweller. Its unusual body plan made it a crucial part of Devonian ecosystems.

Fossils found in Europe, Canada, Greenland, and Central Asia reveal its evolutionary role and highlight the diversity of early fish. You can now explore Psammolepis in detail inside the 3D Dinopedia app.
