New to 3D Dinopedia - Argentavis | 3D Dinopedia
Argentavis has arrived in 3D Dinopedia - a gigantic extinct predatory bird that soared over South America around 6 million years ago (Late Miocene). With a 7-8 m wingspan and an estimated 70-80 kg body mass, it’s often considered the heaviest flying bird in Earth’s history.

For years it was pictured mainly as a scavenger, but research discussed in 2024 suggests a more complex lifestyle: brain anatomy indicates it may have been a kleptoparasite, stealing prey from other predators. Some researchers also propose it could occasionally hunt, swallowing rabbit-sized prey such as small armadillos and rodents from the open plains.

Built for soaring, Argentavis likely spent hours riding thermals at roughly 67 km/h. Taking off was harder and probably required a run-up or strong headwind, which is why it may have nested on Andes foothill cliffs or atop tall trees - perfect launch points for a true sky giant.
