Dive into the Silurian seas with the new 3D model Guiyu oneiros, one of the oldest known bony fishes. Its name, meaning “ghost fish,” marks it as a key link in evolution — the first of the lobe-finned fishes that would eventually give rise to amphibians and all land vertebrates. Guiyu’s shiny scales, bony plates, and fin spines reveal a fascinating mix of primitive armor and modern anatomy — a true evolutionary mosaic.
Discovered in China, Guiyu helps scientists trace how armored fishes evolved into agile swimmers — the ancestors of all modern species. Alongside Guiyu, 3D Dinopedia now features the female Falcatus, newly added to the 3D Scans section. Unlike males, she lacks the distinctive curved dorsal spine — a structure thought to serve as a courtship ornament or a mating aid.
